Innovating new skateboard deck technology
FYS Boards factory has constantly been working on improving skateboard deck technology, by using new material, diversified combination and new processing methods. Through years of practical application and experience, we invented several types of deck building techniques. We test bamboo, fiberglass and carbon fiber, and find helpful ways of laminating them together with wood veneers. We have registered patents on how to laminate light and strong deck.
A new technique for Pressing Bamboo Skateboard Deck -Patent CN 105216077B
Compared with maple, bamboo has stiffer and tougher fiber, making it also an excellent material for building skateboard deck. However, because of its great fiber memory, bamboo veneers are not easy to press to exaggerated shapes. However, through the method introduced in this invention, bamboo plies are possible to form angle nearly to 90-degree. Finished bamboo deck is free from breaks and delamination.
Thermally press two bamboo veneers into a base, one of them is cross-banded. Stem it for 3-5 days in room temperature.
Put other veneers, sidewise together with endwise, in combination with the base, in the hydraulic press
First press in low pressure of 4-6MPa for 1-5 minutes, then change to 18-22 MPa, for 10-20 minutes with temperature of 70-120 degree.
Vacuum the high-temperature steam and cool the semi-finished deck as soon as possible.
Take out and cut to desired shape.
Bamboo, Wood or Hybrid Skateboard Deck with Fiberglass Enhancement- Patent No. CN 102416253
The main purpose of skateboard deck technology is to strengthen traditional wood or bamboo or hybrid deck, by adding fiberglass plies. The production process includes:
Preparation bamboo veneers. Three types bamboo veneers will be used: vertical, horizontal, and alternatively vertical and horizontal. Their thickness depends on the numbers of plies for each deck required. Some material is natural, some is carbonized.
Preparation of wood veneers. Rotary-sliced wood veneers, with sidewise or endwide grain will, be carefully selected, dried, cut into proper size.
Fiberglass pieces preparation. Cut into proper size and applied with epoxy resin, on both sizes, long before or right before combining with other material.
Different combinations of veneers material produce various types of flex and toughness. After being applied with wood glue or epoxy resin, veneers are pressed into semi-finish decks, which is CNC into desired shaped, drilled with mounting holes and polished all around.
Application Case One (2 bamboo+3 fiberglass deck): A type of five-plies deck. There are two bamboo veneers, placed on 2nd, 4th position and three fiberglass plies on 1st, 3rd and 5th. This type of combination reduces the deck weight, while still maintain a good strength. As both face veneers are fiberglass, it also reduces scratches on surface.
Application Case Two (5 bamboo+1 wood+1 fiberglass deck): A hybrid deck consists of 7 plies. Five bamboo veneers are placed on position of 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, while a wood veneer on 4 and a piece of fiberglass on 7. The grain of no. 1, 2, 6 bamboo veneers and no. 4 wood veneer is endwise, and 3, 5 is sidewise.
Application Case Three (7 wood+2 fiberglass): There are seven wood veneers, on position of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, with 2 plies of fiberglass on top and bottom. No. 4, 6 veneer are cross-banded. This combination helps to reduce face veneer scratches and strengthen deck as well.
Application Case Four (7 wood+1 fiberglass): The smaller size 0.6mm-thick fiberglass is applied with epoxy resin on both side and placed on 4th position between wood veneers. Veneer 3 and 6 are cross-banded.
Application Case Five (7 wood+2 fiberglass): Two plies of 0.6mm thick fiberglass are placed on 3rd and 6th position, between 7 wood veneers. No. 2, 5, and 8 are cross-banded wood veneers.
Wood, Bamboo or Hybrid Skateboard Deck Intensified with Carbon Fiber Board- Patent No. CN 103768778A
Boasted with light-weight, high stiffness, corrosion and chemical resistance, carbon fiber board is excellent material to improve traditional decks longevity and performance. The new skateboard deck technology include following steps:
The preparation wood and bamboo veneers is conducted in the same way as explained in Patent NO. CN 102416253.
Cut carbon fiber plate with similar size as those of the wood or bamboo veneers. Brush one side or both side of the board with abrasive paper or grinder. After coated with A/B epoxy resin, whose portion is 100:38~42 for part A to part B, the board is stewed for 10 to 15 minutes, and then pressed with other veneers.
Normally, mixed plies will be hot pressed, under pressure of 14-16MPa, in temperature 75-90 degree for 15-20 minutes, while cold pressed for 10-13 hours. Then, after routering, polishing, formed decks will be painted and assembled with trucks and wheels.
This invention features three types of veneers mixing. A. bamboo plus carbon fiber; B wood plus carbon fiber; C wood, bamboo plus carbon fiber. This will be demonstrated in following five cases:
Case One (8 wood+1carbon fiber): Consist of 9 plies. No. 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 are endwise wood veneers and 3, 5, 7 are sidewise. The first face is carbon fiber board. All are glued with eco-friendly adhesive, pressed in 85 degree temperature for 18 minutes, under pressured of 15 MPa.
Case Two (7 bamboo+1carbon fiber): On position of 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, bamboo veneers with endwise grain are placed, while 3, 5 are those with broadwise grain. Carbon fiber plate is put at the bottom, the 8th place. Formed under 16 MPa pressure, in temperature of 80 degree, for 19 minutes.
Case Three (3 bamboo+2wood+2 carbon fiber): A combination of three types of material, with carbon fiber board on 1st and 7th, bamboo veneer of endwise grain on 2, 4, 6, and sidewise wood plies on 3, 5 position. Thermally formed under 17MPa pressure and 90 degree temperature, for 17 minutes.
Case Four (5 wood+1 carbon fiber): The carbon fiber plate is sandwiched in the middle on the 3rd position, by wood plies, of which 1, 2, 5, 6 are endwise, and 4 is sidewise. Hot squeezed by 14 MPa pressure for 16 minutes.
Case Five (3 bamboo +2 carbon fiber): The bamboo plies are sandwiched by two plies of carbon fiber board. The middle bamboo veneer is cross-banded. Cold formed for 11 hours.
